Episode 30: Free Play 3

Brent and Rob celebrate their 30th episode with another free play and a VGM Karaoke.  Plus, they share some controversial clips from previous episodes that didn't make the final cut.  Video game music never caused so much drama!  Also, a bonus secret treat is revealed at the end of the episode.  Full track listing below.

  2. Congratulations on reaching 30 episodes guys! I swear you guys make my daily commute to work a lot more tolerable (since it's Washington D.C. area traffic). In fact, a co-worker that carpools with me has added your show to his weekly rotation of podcasts after listening to episode 24.

    Guys, I was wondering if there's any chance of you guys featuring arcade (from the 80s and early 90s) and Neo Geo tunes in your play lists? What are your thoughts on it?

    Finally, have you guys thought of adding a PayPal donate button to your site? It would help out when buying games from ebay or new equipment for the podcast.

    Keep up the great work and I can't wait to hear that lost episode.

  3. Z_MET, thanks alot! It's really nice to know the podcast is serving a purpose!

    About arcade music, we're not opposed it, but it's just harder to locate those soundtracks. In one of the episodes, we did play the arcade version of 1943: The Battle of Midway, but it was straight from Youtube. For most of the stuff we play, it's from the actual sound files of the games, and unfortunately, we don't really have easy access to the sound files from arcade games -and Neo Geo games for that matter. Also, we don't have as much knowledge about Neo Geo and arcade stuff. But if there was a resource online somewhere where the Neo Geo stuff was available, we'd probably explore that more. Then again, there's so much from NES, SNES, Genesis, and so on, it would be hard to explore a system we weren't as familiar with. Maybe we'll do Neo Geo only show though at one point (if there was enough stuff available on Youtube).

  6. I started listening to this podcast around episode 70, and have listened to current episodes as they were released. But, I also am catching up on the backlog when I have time. I noticed that Rob F was missing his Switch in those early episodes, so I was wondering when and why that was introduced, and I loved hearing about it in this episode!

  7. BTW, I think you guys are really missing out on some good Game Boy Color soundtracks. I've always thought that you underplay Game Boy, but hadn't realized that part of the reason is that you miss out on some great GBC tunes.

    For similar reasons I think you should play Commodore 64 tracks, but I understand that's a whole different story since it's not primarily a video game console. I think Rob would really like a lot of those tunes (can you say El Rob Hubbard?).

  8. As for the debate on the EWJ tango track, sorry Rob ol' buddy, but Brent is correct. I'm a musician myself, in a band that plays an occasional cover. Right now we have two covers: one that we play exactly as the original was (with only slight variations on an occasional minor detail) and one that we do a cross-genre version of by taking a soul song and turning it into a rock song. Just because we make a lot of variations to the song doesn't mean it's our original song; it's still a cover. If we were to include that cross-genre cover on an album, we'd have to pay for the legal right to use it, variations and all. It doesn't have to be the same exact song note for note, it's just another version of the same song. If an existing song is the basis of your song, that song is not an original work and trying to profit off of it without paying for the rights to use it would be illegal in the face of copyright laws. Tallarico got away with using classical music as the basis of some EWJ songs because those songs are public domain and covered by Fair Use. If he did the same thing with a more modern song that somebody owned the rights to, he would either have to pay them for the rights to use the song in the game, or he would get in legal trouble for plagiarism.

    tl;dr: Brent is right even when the matter is scrutinized under copyright law.
