Episode 59: Square Squared

For Episode 59, Brent and Rob revisit the focus of Episode 5, Square (and Squaresoft), the legendary company specializing in role-playing games such as Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger.  Basically, it's Square part 2, or Square 2, which makes it look like it could be called Square Squared, thus the title of the episode.  This time, Brent and Rob delve into lesser known Square titles, mostly stuff that was only released in Japan, and in turn, discover some wonderful gems.  Full track listing below.

  1. densetsu = legend

I think Rob tends to hear similarities to street fighter 2 every time there are sort of uptempo bell sounds, used in an arpeggio...

Romancing Saga is a totally separate line of rpgs, and Saga for GB was re-named "final fantasy" b/c at that point there were no saga games released in the US (as Brent hypothesized, for "sales reasons")

  3. Sorry, for the above. Too many typos. Just wanted to say I agree that Secret of Mana is a fantastic soundtrack. I think the Square episodes are my favorite since I was a Square fan boy playing games when I was younger. I look forward to this podcast every week! Thank you!

  4. That Rudra no Hihou track sounds a lot like Breath of Fire. I wonder if Ryuji Sasai knows Mari Yamaguchi.

  5. After hearing Emperor of Balladry, I had to go and play Treasure Hunter G, and hear it in proper context. I just finished it 10 minutes ago, and that song, is definitely the highlight of the entire game. Neat battle system though

  6. That last one from Front Mission: Gun Hazard is clearly an early version of Under the Rotting Pizza from FF7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ezxwm4Y0iZ8
