LMH Mixtape #10: Free Play

With all the tracks the boizz were sifting through on a regular basis, it came as no surprise that they'd been building up a considerable list of B-sides that had never quite fit into any regular episodes. The solution to getting these tunes some airtime? Setting the podcast to free play: no selective focus, no restrictive theme -- just choice jams, period.

Coming Soon: New LMH Full Episodes!

Due to increasing demand, Brent and Rob have decided to start recording new Legacy Music Hour episodes, to be released once a month.  Possible bonus new episodes may be released every now and then as well.  So with the new episodes, along with the mixtapes put together by KeyGlyph every other week, LMH users will get at least three downloads a month!  That's almost one download every week.  The first of the new Legacy Music Hour episodes is planned to come out in early November, so stay posted.

LMH Mixtape #9: Disney

Episode 9 was a survey of Disney's contributions to classic gaming, featuring tunes from titles that either starred the company's flagship characters or were based on their feature films and TV shows.  Many users most likely anticipated the set list's final track, which closed things out on a perfect note.

LMH Mixtape #8: Mari Yamaguchi

Episode 8 brought us LMH's second composer focus, this time on Mari Yamaguchi.  Yamaguchi was equally talented at crafting tight, catchy tunes for the NES as she was at composing sweeping symphonic pieces for the SNES.  If you don't already find yourself wishing that more orchestras in the world would perform video game music, this mixtape will change that.

NOTE TO THE DETAIL-ORIENTED:  Mari Yamaguchi only arranged the track "The Minks" from U.N. Squadron (Manami Matsumae composed) for the SNES, and it's also possible that Yamaguchi did not compose "Introduction" from U.N. Squadron and that the composer of that track is unknown.  Also, with Final Fight 2's "Flower Shower", Yamaguchi might not have composed that track, but it's just a guess (a bunch of composers worked on that soundtrack).  Also also, Yasuaki Fujita confirmed somewhat recently that he composed "Distant View" and "Expedition" from Breath of Fire, but authorities at the Legacy Music Hour believe that Yasuaki is actually remembering things incorrectly.  It was 20 years ago, after all.  "Distant View" sounds so much like Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts that it seems impossible to not be Yamaguchi.  Also, "Expedition" really sounds like her too, and is very similar to Magical Quest in certain parts.  So all these tracks have been left included in this mix, even though it's up for debate whether or not they should be there.

LMH Mixtape #7: Elevator Music

From the LMH pocket dictionary:

el·e·va·tor mu·sic (n.):  1. Tunes with a certain synthy-sounding, jazzy aesthetic, described by some as "cheesy" or "bad." 2. The kind of music you'd hear if you were on hold for the doctor's office. 3. Anything that sounds like, or is, "The Girl from Ipanema." 4. The jam.

NOTE: If it wasn't addressed in any subsequent episodes, Rob made an error by playing two TurboGrafx-CD tracks, which are technically illegal plays. Those tracks were still included in this mixtape, however.

LMH Mixtape #4: Junko Tamiya

Episode four marked the first occurrence of the "composer focus", an entire installment dedicated to showcasing the works of one musician.  The tradition began with Junko Tamiya, and although a few selections by other composers sneaked into the original episode, the errors were excluded this time around to produce an all-Tamiya mixtape.

NOTE TO THE DETAIL-ORIENTED:  Bionic Commando's "Area 1" was composed by Harumi Fujita, but Junko Tamiya's involvement as its arranger for the NES port merited its inclusion on the setlist.

Coming Soon: The LMH Mixtapes!

Legacy Music Hour user, KeyGlyph, has been kind enough to take on the duties of making the Legacy Music Hour Mixtapes.  She will be editing together music-only versions of every LMH episode (with a little bit of Brent/Rob banter at the top), posting them on the official LMH site, and including her own commentary and other notes.  Mixtape episodes will start appearing soon, so stay tuned.  And let's all give a big thank you KeyGlyph for taking on this arduous task!
