Episode 182: Best Of Year In Review 5

Once again, Brent and Rob countdown their top tracks of the year (Episodes 170 through 180).  This year, they present their favorite five (instead of ten) in order from fifth to first best.  As usual, tracks selected for this episode are pieces of video game music they became aware of only within the last year and that were played on the show.  Similar to last year’s countdown, Brent talks a long time at the beginning of the episode, which might be kind of boring, so sorry about that.  However, unlike any previous year, something kind of neat happens with Brent and Rob.  Listen and find out what it is.  Partial track listing below.

Game - Composer - Song - Company - Console - Year (North American release unless otherwise indicated)

Dragon Ball Z: Super Butouden 2 - Kenji Yamamoto - Ending - TOSE/Bandai - Super Famicom - 1993

  1. Wow, "Gabecube" made it! I wonder what other LMH legislation we can push through the comments section.

Every LMH year, I wonder if there will be crossover. That it happened this year is actually kinda satisfying. Usually the tension of the possibility of crossover tends to give me a stomach ache. Uh oh...I gotta go to the bathroom.

  2. That Racing Hero track is the winner this year for me. Supreme jam. Does anybody know of an app for iPhones that plays arcade music files? The app I have only covers the main consoles and handhelds.

What is the name of the game with the heavy bass track? Couldn't hear it in the podcast and didn't see it in previous track listings.

Btw, Pointed Questions is great. Are we going to get a Rob F Switch edition on being a barber, or maybe on being someone who was sent home to be a family man?

  5. Surprised you didn't know about the Metroid 2 track until this year! There's a great rock cover of it by Metroid Metal:

  7. Hey, Rob's #1 comes from the last episode, which you said would be included in next year's countdown consideration! But then, I could see how it could end up in a sort of limbo if it weren't included here, since Rob played another track from the same game two episodes earlier and hence probably discovered it during this past year, making it ineligible for next year. Or something. Basically I'm okay with this (as long as Rob doesn't put it on the countdown next year!).

Also, I assumed that you had runners-up and honorable mentions so you could use them as backup tracks in case of any countdown crossover. But your way of handling it was fun, and I totally didn't mind!

  8. What a coincidence! A couple days ago I dug out my Metroid ll cart and Super Gameboy to try and beat a game I could not as a child. A few hours ago I reached the final boss but have yet to beat it. Great picks! My top two from this ep are SMT If and Metroid tracks. Rygar to the rescue with a clean pair of pants. -Greg

  11. Brent and Rob, since both of you enjoyed the Cocoron track, I was wondering if you guys have ever played EVERSION. DO NOT RESEARCH THE GAME PRIOR TO PLAYING IT. I think it may be PC only but it is very easy to find and play after a google search. Its 8-bit style ought to be up Ron's alley.

-Long time listener. Keep it up guys!
P.S. Brent, Rob, when are you guys coming to San Diego? Comedy show or otherwise?

  12. I can't seem to remember the name of the audio software Rob and Brent use to isolate tracks. Does anyone remember? Maybe spare a borderline ludite a link? Thanks in advanced.

  14. Translator's note for Radical Dreamers from the patch's README:

"We're probably gonna get some heat for this translation, because it's not really word-for-word, like some people want. Wordings were changed to make things flow better, and cultural "in-jokes" were altered to be funny for English speakers. However, things like character progression, plot structure, and narrative style were all left untouched so that the game retained as much of its original feel as possible.

We kept more in line with the English versions of names as they appear in the American versions of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, instead of retaining the Japanese naming conventions."

Thankfully, it's not as blatantly horrendous as the infamous Final Fantasy IV translation that added a bunch of contemporary pop-culture references to make the jokes "better". I mean, William Shatner in a Final Fantasy game!?
