Episode 189: Keeping Things Up

It’s been a while since Brent and Rob have recorded an episode in different cities.  Rob actually stays awake the entire time!  The music keeps things moving.  And everyone stays positive.  That’s the theme of the show: Keeping Things Up (awake, in motion, and positive).  So let this episode be a positive influence on you when you listen to it, or may it help you stay awake, or help you keep going, or all the above.  And most of all, enjoy the music.  Full track listing below.

  1. Great episode, BOIZZ! I thoroughly enjoyed the tracks. Just one comment for you: Rob, regarding your client with the Hammer dev remnants, you have to get that stuff, every bit of it you can. Then, play the game, have fun, but when you're done, PLEASE contact Frank Cifaldi.

Every bit of whatever that guy has is archeological gold. Most of that stuff is lost to history forever, and it's a tragedy. Frank is the founder and director of the Video Game History Foundation, which catalogs and digitizes and archives this kind of thing. Here's the website: https://gamehistory.org/ And you can reach Frank Cifaldi there or on his Twitter or anywhere online. Anyway, you guys turned me on to the value of curating music related to classic gaming. This potential find is really important to gaming history.

    1. I just saw this clip on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D43HBg9joZs
It looks like this game was at one point intended for the Sega CD. Possibly that version was going to be a 3D game with scaling. In any case, Rob, you gotta get your hands on that stuff!

  3. Favorite rebranded game: Kamen no Ninja Hanamaru which was rebranded as Yo! Noid. And I beat Yo! Noid.

  4. Truely this is the best music ever made.
Certain sections of the Flying Hero track sound like they could be used as background music in an 80s or 90s film. The scene I picture with this track is a group of people working on a big project like fixing up a dilapidated building to use as a community center, constructing a soapbox derby car, or washing cars to raise money. Of course each one of these would include a scene where the project devolves into horseplay and they would spray each other with the hose, or flick paint at each other to show the bond they have formed, and how much fun they are having.
Apologies for the negativity but I personally don't care too much for water levels. Off the top of my head the only water levels I loved were from Mega Man games. Maybe I just wasn't into them because they tend to be harder and slower. Anybody have water levels they recommend?
I'm surprised that Switch chose Mario as his favorite! I thought a diehard Sega soldier would have picked a Genesis franchise.

    1. Well, there were a lot of excellent Sega games, but I don't know any Sega franchises that were universally awesome. Maybe Wonder Boy. Even Sonic had its lesser games(Sonic 3, in my opinion, wasn't nearly as good as the first two).

Speaking of Sonic, That game has my favorite water level. It's one of those "love to hate" levels, but the feeling of panic when you think you're going to run out of air still gets me breathing heavily.

    2. ....But best water levels? Ecco the Dolphin. Hands down.

    3. True. I wasn't into Sonic 3 either. Now that you mention it, the water levels from the first 2 Sonic games were good. I'll have to check out Ecco. I rented it as a kid but don't remember it well. Thanks!

  5. That Alien 3 track is amazing.

I really like how it has a break down in it, but it's different than a break down--it's more like a "syphon up"; the notes get sucked away.

  7. New listener here. Just thought you guys might be interested in the SEGA Genesis Flashback that was just announced. 85 sega classics in HD, similar to the NES classic that came out not too long ago. Anywho, I love your show! It's great to listen to while I work and study!

  8. Not related to anything specifically from this episode but I just found out the Sega Mark lll had an FM Synth peripheral that allowed for enhanced audio quality from its games. The following video demonstrates the huge improvement in sound quality with the FM add-on. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1VqxFtV9w8Y

  9. I think upon careful examination this is the best episode ever. The tracks are bombastic, all of them just awesome. I find each track gets stuck in my head on a regular basis.

  10. When you guys mentioned rebranded games another that quickly came to my mind would be Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine which was a rebranding of Puyo Puyo.
