LMH Mixtape #81: Secret of Mana

After eighty-one episodes, Brent and Rob decided to do their first focus on one individual game's soundtrack: Secret of Mana.  Although opinions were mixed as to whether the game itself was one of the greatest titles of all time or just a super effective sedative, the boizz have absolutely no disagreements over the quality of the music.  Get right into the thick of it and take a journey through these selections from the dynamic fantasy soundscapes of Hiroki Kikuta.

  1. As a newer user of the podcast, I am super excited to see music from one of my favorite games. I've been enjoying playing this on the SNES Classic with my stepdaughter.

Has anyone played the remake on PC/PS4?

    1. I've played the PS4 remake quite a bit(enough to get every trophy in the game). It's...flawed to put it kindly. Secret of Mana is my favorite game of all time, so maybe I judged it harder than others would. It was still fun just because the original is so great, but I'll always prefer the original over any remake.

  2. Secret of Mana is known in the retro community for using all eight available channels in the SNES sound chip, requiring it to mute some to play the game's sound effects. Also, note, due to a glitch, I couldn't post this on Safari or iTunes for iOS. I had to use Chrome for iOS.

  3. Secret of Mana is still one of the greatest games of all time. Sorry Rob and Gabe, but you're wrong about this game. It does take a little bit of work to get past the initial story set up, but it's so worth it once you get further into the game. And if you can pull together a 3 person co-op team it's so much fun!

Hiroki Kikuta knocked it out of the park with this soundtrack! To use some Brent expressions: Pound for pound, the Secret of Mana soundtrack is the best! It's so good!

  4. I am playing the original SOM on iPhone for the first time, and eventually planning to try the 3D remake of the Gameboy predecessor, Adventures of Mana. It looks awesome. I can really see the inspiration for later RPGs in this one. Square has often refused to evolve, but when they get creative, it changes the world.
